Short

Just because I'm short, people make me think that I will not do good in meets. (or in any thing) is that true? Are there ANY short swimmers out there?

If I didn't swim, i'd weigh 300 pounds!

Dude...or Dudette, but I'm guessing Dude,

No way. I don't think that your height has anything to do with it. I'm not a short swimming, but a girl on my team is really short and tiny and man she can kick it!!!!

Uh...Coach...I think that my lung just broke....

hey, I'm a shorty smiling smiley I'm just barely 5'1" and I'm actually one of the top swimmers on my team. I actually know a lot of short swimmers that are really good!! Sometimes being short means that you will have to work harder especially if your racing against someone thats about a foot taller than you..but just kick it and you'll be good smiling smiley

uh coach...i cant swim today..i have stroke amnesia smiling smiley

Hey,

1st of all, you can't listen to the people who say you are too short to swim. Either they aren't half as fast as you..or they are just jealous. Now take for example Janet Evans. She's short...But she has 2 world records and nobody, not anyone has come close to those records. She's short, she knows it..but that doesn't stop her from swimming, and doing her best.

Hope that helped!

Catch you on the flipside,
Nina

Being short, in my opinion, does not have much (or anything) to do with how you compete in meets or competitions. I'm 5'2" and I think I do pretty well for only a 2nd year swimmer, and Janet Evans is 5'4" and she did a 4:03 in the 400 m free swim in the Olympics. She's an awesome swimmer and has won Olympic gold and she's not that tall. I think height gives you an advantage but it's not what helps you win.

First, and to get the mental perspective out of the way,I would have to urge you to not think of what you start with in terms of physique, but only how much you develop as a swimmer. That is after all the only thing you can be hold responsible of,and the only thing you can control.
Usually, short people come with higher level of body control and better movement coordination. This can really come in handy in fly and breast.
Moreover, short people have a better metabolism in terms of the heart's ability to provide fresh blood to the muscles,as their {size of heart}/{size of body}ratio is bigger than at tall people. This can help in distance disciplines.
Finally, technique flaws prove to be more detrimental to a tall person's swim, rather than to a short's one(for example, hip drop at the same degrees in both swimmers, exposes greater body surface directly facing water stream at tall people).
However, body control can be obtained, and technique can be developed. And good cardiovascular action is something that years of aerobic training can bring.
So,I guess that I am of the opinion that size does matter in swimming, but it goes both ways. So,it may be easier for some short people to be extremely good swimmers in some disciplines, but truly elite level of swimming is to be more probably reached by a couple of tall swimmers, having done the work required to ultimately take full control of their body.

in swimming, Size does not matter, its all about technique and mental training. I used to have a friend who was SO SO SO self motivated and shes about 2ft shorter than me. she would lap me in 1000 and worked very hard. Its all in your mind, dont let other people get to you, its all about proper technique and how much you want it.

Could you maybe translate 4'11 in centimetres.I really dont understand much other than the metre system. And could you please tell me how much 189cm and 194cm are?
Thanks.

4 ft 11 inches is roughly 149.9 cm. 189cm= about 6 ft and 1.5 inches. 194cm= about 6 feet 3 inches.

Impressive.A meter and a half. But then again,I dont know how yards translate into meters either, and so I cant really evaluate(actually, what's wrong with you people?meters are good.they come with 10-based sub-units.it is quite a simple measuring system).
Thank you maryanna.

the time would be about a 58 in a 50 meter pool, i def. hate the standard system in the US when i moved here from Russia i had such a hard time adjusting and swimming in yards is so pointless.
