Tall, long-armed athletes are the prototype for the game, where 85% of the body is submerged. About the same underwater percentage holds true for the grabbing, holding, kicking, wrestling and yanking of swimsuits that makes the game even tougher. The water polo pictures are taken during the Sydney 2000 Olympic water polo event.

It looks like perhaps the most effortless swimming event, but there is more to synchronised swimming than what appears on the surface. Besides demanding strength, endurance, flexibility, grace and artistry, it requires exceptional breath control. View some stunning photographs from the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

Competitors perform a series of dives and are awarded points up to 10, depending upon their elegance and skill. The points are then adjusted for the degree of difficulty, based on the number and types of manoeuvres attempted. A reverse 1.5 somersault with 3.5 twists, for example, is among the most difficult. The Olympic triathlon consists of a 1.5 kilometres open-water swim around Farm Cove in Sydney Harbour, a 40 kilometres cycle and a ten kilometres run around the Opera House, Royal Botanical Gardens and Domain. The three elements follow on one from the other without rest. View pictures from the Sydney 2000 Olympic triathlon event.
